How would be our everyday lives without electricity?

I don't know why, but I am always afraid that the subway electricity could be strong enough to generate a magnetic field that could damage a computer hard disk. So if I got to move a laptop around, I make sure not to put it directly on the ground, just in case the isolation is not sufficient to prevent such a dramatic scenario.
