We are interested in the origin of the French word Coquelicot.
As it happens, the word has a very interesting story.
Rooster in French is "coq", to recall how the chicken male sounds like. It is pronounced "cock" and is the origin of "cock-a-doodle" which translates "cocorico" in French.
And "coquelicot" comes directly from "cocorico". It represents both the animal ("coq") and its call. But for what reason exactly?
Simply because the poppy flower looks like a rooster crest!
