"You won't be alone long!"
I found out that there was not only one, but two collections of Tales of Terror and Mystery, one by Arthur Conan Doyle of course, and another one by Edgar Allan Poe...
As it happens, Poe wrote a famous short story of his: "The Black Cat" about cruelty towards animals. A man deliberately gouged out his cat's eye using a penknife, and the day after, he hanged the animal from a tree.
On the other hand, Doyle wrote "The Brazilian Cat", a completely different story relating a man trying to kill another man with the help of his ferocious, treacherous, and bloodthirsty black puma!
Now guess which cruelty is the most terrifying!
