The darkness took place generations ago. All currently living forms have been born after dark. People are used to it because they don't know anything else. At some point, they won't see the sun brighter than the full moon we know.
And the moon they know is very different. A collision with an asteroid changed its trajectory, and for time immemorial, the moon is falling down on earth. It has been broken in several parts due to Earth's gravity. Early fragment impacts have released massive amounts of dust and ash into the atmosphere, reducing surface sunlight, hindering photosynthesis, and severely disrupting the biosphere.
About 99% of the moon is still whirling in orbit... The end of the world only begins.
Would that be a terrifying nightmare? Fortunately, it was one.
The boy is not even afraid at all. He saw a documentary about the dinosaurs' extinction theories, and he's got a lot of imagination. He thought there was no danger for him and his mother, because they are no dinosaurs.
